Shopping for Alexis

When it comes to clothes shopping for little girls, there are a lot of options out there. But if you're like me, you don't want to spend the same amount on your kids' clothes as you do on your own. After all, they're just going to outgrow them in a few months and/or ruin them eating spaghetti. Thankfully there are a lot of brands out there that are super cute and durable but not high on cost. I'm sharing some of our favorite money-saving brands in this post.

Garanimals
When it comes to cheap, cute, durable clothes for little ones, Garanimals may have the market cornered. That's probably why a majority of the clothing in Alexis's closet and drawers is this brand. This year's printed cuffed jegging shorts and matching tie-front raglan tees are my favorite for casual weekends. We also stock up on the graphic tees and raglan tees for daycare (I recommend buying Garanimals shirts one size up. They shrink.). And because little girls are often not ladylike when wearing cute dresses, these bike shorts come in handy. Here's the link to the pink skort she's wearing in the second picture above.

Cat & Jack (Target)
This is one of my absolute favorite brands. Cost wise, it's a little bit higher than Garanimals, but they have a much larger selection. Also, they don't shrink! I still buy Alexis's t-shirts one size up just to get a little bit longer use out of them. The blue skirt and heart shirt combo in the picture on the left is one of my favorite things to put her in, and the green tunic tank on the right comes in two other patterns. These lace shorts are so adorable, we have two pair! I've also  been super impressed with Cat & Jack shoes, like these brown sandals (pictured above) and these purple hiking sandals.

JCPenney (left)
JCPenney is such a good store for affordable fashion for the whole family. For Alexis, I particularly like the Okie Dokie brand. The quality is up there with Cat & Jack, and so far I've had no issues with shrinkage. I couldn't find a link to the shirt Alexis is wearing, but we got this tie-dye flower dress at the same time. She's been wearing this monster tie-sleeve tee and polka dot skirt on repeat since the weather first warmed up. And I'm resisting the urge (barely) to order this cool cat dress.

Kohl's (middle)
If there's one thing you can count on at Kohl's, it's a sale. Maybe it's just me, but every time I go there's some kind of sale going on. You don't need a sale to feel like you're getting a good deal on their Jumping Bean brand for kids. They have really cute mix-and-match shirts, skirts, leggings, shorts, and pants, not to mention adorable dresses like these, which may be my favorite type of dresses to buy for Alexis. Here's the link to the Minnie Mouse dress she's wearing in the picture. She also wears this Elena of Avalor dress all the time.

Children's Place (right)
We don't shop at the Children's Place as frequently as we used to, but they are a great place to stock up on t-shirts and jeans. They also have cute matching sets like these striped shorts and smiley face tank. I'm a fan of their dressier shirts, as well. Beware, their stuff runs small and shirts especially shrink.

Old Navy -- not pictured
One of the other places I regularly shop for Alexis is Old Navy, but for some reason I have no pictures of her wearing anything from there. We stocked up on spring dresses (like this striped ladybug dress in pink and this green striped dress) right when they first came out, and this adorable star dress just came in the mail. I usually buy her normal size unless I want a little more length.

I'm always on the hunt for cute, durable, and most importantly affordable brands for Alexis. Are there any places not on my list you'd recommend? Leave me a comment!

Monday Motivation

You can't move forward if you're constantly fighting the same battle. That doesn't mean giving up. It just means focusing on what's important to you and your family. Not every fight is worth your attention. So pick your battles; fight for what's right; and don't get stuck running in circles around an unresolvable issue.

Have a great week!

20 Things to Do with Your Kids this Summer

Summer is just two weeks away. Have you thought about how you'll be spending those long days with your kids? Of course there are lots of summer camps out there, but those only last a week or two, and this late in the game many have already filled up. Whether you're a working mama looking for weekend activities or a stay-at-home mom looking for things to do that won't drain your pocketbook, this post is for you! And for all my Wiregrass readers, you'll find links to some of my favorite summer programs embedded throughout.

1. Do a park and/or playground crawl. That's where you visit a new park or playground every week. You can include old favorites like the Rotary Miracle Playground and the Children's Jungle Garden at DABG.

2. Fly a kite.

3. Join a summer reading program. In addition to offering prizes for getting your kids to read more, your local library will also have corresponding programs all summer long.

4. Go for a bike ride. Explore your neighborhood (ours has a lake and playground) or a local trail.

5. Have a picnic. I recommend Landmark Park and Kolomoki Mounds. Both offer a unique glimpse into the history of the Wiregrass, have playgrounds, and Landmark Park has on old-fashioned drug store complete with working soda and ice cream counter.

6. Make a fort out of boxes or blankets. Perfect for rainy days.

7. Camp out in the backyard. You can keep it simple or go for the full experience with s'mores and grilled hot dogs or hamburgers.

8. Paint pet rocks.

9. Have a mini golf night. We like Adventureland, but there's also glow-in-the-dark putt-putt and this new place in Enterprise.

10. Visit a local museum.

11. Get crafty. Our local art museum has a family day the first Saturday of every month. Our library also does story and craft time every week. You can also check out the kids workshops/classes offered by Michaels and Home Depot.

12. Go bowling. Many bowling allies offer a free kids summer bowling program. Find out if yours do here.

13. Get out in nature. We'll definitely be taking advantage of the Nature Tales and Animal Adventures programs at Landmark Park.

14. Visit a farmers market or you-pick farm.

15. Go fishing.

16. Visit a water park/splash pad.

17. Have a movie marathon complete with popcorn and your favorite snacks. If you've got a projector and white sheet, you can have an outdoor movie night.

18. Support your local military base. They've got tons of things the public can do like swimming, horseback riding, movies, and bowling, not to mention events that are open to everyone in the community.

19. Bust a move! Have an indoor/outdoor dance party. Or learn some new moves. The Cultural Arts Center offers weekly ballroom dance classes and line dancing.

20. Do a little science. Here are 50 experiments you can do at home, or you can leave it to the professionals like the Wacky Wednesdays program at Landmark Park .

Button Front Striped Midi Skirt

Midi skirts are having a moment, and I'm loving it. Ever since I saw this post over on Putting Me Together, I've been on the lookout for a similar skirt, so when I found this one at Target a couple weekends ago for under $25 I couldn't pass it up. The waistband is stretchy in back and flat in front. It's not lined but I didn't find it to be so thin as to be see-through. I'm normally size 6/8 or medium and wearing this in a medium with the waistband around my natural waist.

My t-shirt is from last summer and not available anymore, but I linked to some similar options below all under $20. As always with Forever21, I recommend going up a size. My shoes are several years old and I couldn't find anything really similar, but I love these, these, and these.

Rainbow Skirt

It's no secret that Target is one of my favorite stores. If there's any doubt, just ask Alexis. I'm in love with this A New Day skirt. The rainbow of colors; the flounce hem; what's not to love? It also has a stretchy waist band and is lined so it's not see through. I'm 5'2" and wearing a medium.

Also, I finally found a pair of nude ankle strap sandals in a medium block heel. They also come in a lower and higher heel and several colors.

Mommy the Journalist's Mother's Day Gift Guide

Moms. They do it all and then some, constantly putting others needs before their own. One day every year is set aside to recognize how amazing our mamas are. This year, the National Retail Federation estimates $23-billion will be spent on Mother's Day. If you're stumped about what to buy, I've rounded up 32 ideas for less than $100.

Jewelry is the most popular Mother’s Day gift. If you’re looking for something sentimental, check out this handwriting bracelet or these personalized initial bracelets.

About a third of moms say what they'd really like to receive is a gift of experience, like these cooking and craft classes by Michael's. Prices vary depending on what you choose.

Raise your hand if your mama is the hardest working person you know. Let her show off all that awesomeness with this wonder woman tee. And we all know mama knows best. This tee will just remind everyone else. And just for fun – I love this sassy pin.

For the fashionista mom, why not a pair of tassel earrings or fun slide sandals? Her ears and feet will thank you.

I don't know a mom who wouldn't love a relaxing spa day. You can give her one at home. All you need are some bath bombs, a bathtub caddy so she can keep her book and/or wine glass dry, and some cute and comfy PJs (I like this top and bottom set). Round it all out with one of these beauty boxes and mom's all set.

Make the rare occasion when mom gets to sit down a little more comfortable with some chic pillows and a cozy blanket. I love these round and rectangle velvet pillows and this striped throw.

For the mom who’s super organized or maybe needs a little help in that department, check out this pretty mail organizer to keep the kitchen counter clutter free. And she’ll never lose her keys again with this stylish tracker.

For the mom who can’t leave the house without taking, well, the whole house with her, consider this stylish straw tote. Then there’s this library card tote for those bookworm moms. And what about the mom who hates lugging a big bag around? For her, check out this sleek fanny pack.

Is your mom always in the kitchen? Consider this pretty little apron, unique measuring spoons, and cute floral canister. For the mom who's looking to up her cooking game, check out this indoor herb garden. A set of these pretty bottle stoppers is perfect for the mom who likes a glass of wine (or two or three). And for the mom who doesn't have time to cook, there's always the instant pot. Don't forget a recipe book!

If none of these ideas is up your alley, you can't go wrong with family pictures, especially when they're in this heart-shaped collage or this pretty frame. And this book is sure to remind mom just how special she is.

And finally, here are three gift ideas that are just for fun. Some pretty string lights to brighten up mom's favorite space; a table top corn hole game to make your next family dinner a little more entertaining; and some booty bands just because.

This post is not sponsored. I compiled it by looking through the Mother's Day sections of several of my favorite stores and magazines. I hope this list helps you find the perfect gift for your mom! Moms, let me know in the comments what's on your wish list this Mother's Day.

Green Dress

I recently realized that the one color my spring/summer wardrobe is lacking is green, so I've been buying all the green things like this gorgeous swing dress (and this green floral tank). I pretty much live in dresses all summer long and this one will definitely be on repeat. It's very light and has such pretty detailing on the back. For work, I threw on a white jacket. The only thing I'd change about this outfit is my shoes, but every time I find a pair of nude sandals I like they don't have my size.

I'm 5'2" and usually a S/M, wearing this in medium. If you'd like something similar but with a little less shoulder showing check out this tank dress and this tiered sleeve dress.
