Real Outfit Roundup: Printed Skirts & Dresses

by - May 02, 2021

If there's one thing about me you should know, it's that I love prints. Florals, stripes, polka dots - I'll take them all! This past week was a typical southern spring. Our temperatures were consistently in the mid-80s, so my newer prints came out to play.

My week was spent mostly at home, other than my yoga class and a retirement party for my father-in-law. Still, I wanted to really embrace the spring vibe our weather was putting off and had a few outfit ideas I wanted to try out. So let's dive on in, shall we?

Sizing info: I'm 5'2" and usually wear a size medium or 6/8 in tops and dresses, size 6 in bottoms, and size 7 in shoes.

This has quickly become my go-to maxi dress, especially for wearing around the house. It's super comfortable and I love the color. This is the exact dress in yellow, but this purple hasn't been on the website at all that I've seen. I'm linking to three very similar dresses that you can try.

This is a favorite from last year, but I didn't have much occasion to wear it. Not that last Tuesday was truly an occasion. My shoes are new but they were literally the last pair in stock, so I've linked to a similar pair.

Up next is an experiment in print mixing that I think turned out very well. First, I'll show you how I would wear this look to work followed by how I actually wore it all day.

Really, the only difference between the two outfits is the blazer. The key to making this pairing work lies in the shades of blue. The way I like to think about print mixing a shirt and skirt is to pretend you're creating a custom dress that's just for you.

This next outfit is what I wore to my father-in-law's retirement ceremony. I wore my dark denim jacket for the actual party because it was inside a heavily air conditioned building so the extra layer was nice, but I went without the rest of the day.

I fell in love with this pineapple t-shirt last year and my love continues on this year. I love the way this outfit turned out. The bright colors of the t-shirt paired with the fun pattern of the skirt and punctuated with a surprise pop of bright yellow.

Which brings us to Saturday...

I had every intention of wearing this dress on its own, but then decided I didn't like the way it was laying. First, I tried a wide belt, which worked but I still wasn't satisfied with the top, so I layered my short-sleeve button-up chambray shirt over everything, but it was too lose and looked kind of sloppy. So then I decided to tie the bottom. I did it two different ways and settled on this version where you can still see a peek of the dress top. Then I went through at least eight pair of shoes before I decided on these dark brown slides. This was the perfect running errands followed by dinner with the hubs outfit.

That's it for me! I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend!
