8 Outfits for a Southern Winter
Winter is a weird time to live in the southern part of the United States. This is the time of year we tend to experience a little bit of all the seasons, sometimes in the span of one day. That can make it difficult to get dressed, depending on what your day looks like.
This week I've got eight outfits I've worn over the last two weeks during what I would describe as fall to mild-winter weather. One week was during our Thanksgiving holiday break, so it's not all workwear, although I would wear most of those outfits to school. My style doesn't change much from work to home.
Sizing note: I'm 5'2" and weigh about 140 lbs. I typically wear a small or 6 in clothes and size 7 in shoes.
These first three outfits are from our trip to St. Augustine. It was our anniversary/birthday trip, and the first time since Covid my husband and I have gotten to take a trip by ourselves. We did a lot of walking on this trip, and the weather was overcast, windy, wet, and cold both days we were there, so comfort was more important that being stylish. Thankfully, my favorite legging-like pants, the Stevie from Old Navy, are the perfect cross between comfort and style. They pair wonderfully with tunic-style shirts and work well with pretty much any type of shoe. I chose to wear my buckle boots both days because they are hands down the most comfortable pair of boots I own. You can't really see it in this picture, but I am wearing a camisole beneath my shirt.
Day two in St. Augustine saw me wearing the same Stevie pants with a different button-down. This one was a little bit thicker, which was nice for the cooler weather. My leather jacket was the perfect finishing touch, especially since it was misting rain pretty much all day.
Third and final day of our trip was actually Thanksgiving. We got up early to drive back home to spend the afternoon with family. I wanted to be comfortable but also look like I put some effort into getting dressed. I am in love with these kicker bootcut jeans from Old Navy. They are a great fit for my body type. This ribbed t-shirt is from Target and is super soft and stretchy. It's pretty form-fitting, though, so it works best tucked in. My corduroy jacket is a cropped style, but on me that means it hits perfectly at my waist. I like that it's not super thick. In fact, for corduroy, it was downright cool.
The weekend after Thanksgiving, we welcomed in the Christmas season with a visit to one of our favorite local light displays. We go every year we're able. This year, it was fairly warm but kind of rainy. I'm wearing my faux leather pants from a few years ago with one of my most-worn Amazon sweaters. I threw my leather jacket over top of it because it was kind of drizzling and finished things off with my black Chelsea boots. Alexis's outfit is super cute, but it was a gift, and I have no idea where it came from.
I love a good grandpa sweater. I came across this one in the juniors section at Walmart and couldn't pass it up. The colors made me think of caramel. The pattern has just enough black woven into it to pair nicely with black pants. These are my fave OG Chinos from Old Navy. My blouse is a long-sleeved version of one I bought over the summer. It's thin and perfect for layering.
This navy-blue floral-print blouse is one that I simultaneously love and hate. I love the colors and the flowy fit, but I hate the attached under-shell. It does not stay where it's supposed to, and I found myself adjusting it all day long to keep the top of my bra from showing. I'm pretty sure I can disconnect the tops into two pieces, though, and fix that problem. Last time I wore this blouse it was with these same gray jeans but with red flats. This go 'round I decided to switch things up with navy blue flats instead, and I love the almost monochromatic result. Both my blouse and jeans came in a Wantable box, but I'll try to find similar.
I've owned this pair of pants for years, but I'd gotten out of the habit of wearing them since leaving the TV station. I'm glad I hung on to them, though, because they're such a classic pattern and style. I wanted to keep my outfit simple this day so a classic-cut, solid-colored v-neck sweater with a pair of perfectly-matched ballet flats did the trick.
The first weekend in December, my parents and I took Alexis to a Christmas festival. If you can't tell from the picture, it was a Whoville-themed festival. It was warm for December, even for the South, with highs being in the mid-to-upper 70s. It was kind of overcast and there was a slight breeze, though, so I was comfortable with a light jacket. I got this blouse from Old Navy with the intention of it being an understated Christmas top. It's so pretty in person with such a feminine pattern and the cutest flutter sleeves, but buyer beware: it runs super small. I ordered up one size and wish I'd gone up two. That's how tight the bodice fits, even with the stretchy smocked back.
