What I Wore to School Last Week

by - September 01, 2024

We've officially entered the -ber months, meaning things should start to eventually cool off. September 1st is what meteorologists deem the start of fall, although your calendar will have it marked later in the month, and where I live won't really start to see fall-like weather until closer to Halloween.

Still, this is when I start to dig out all my fall decorations, and I start to incorporate darker, warmer tones into my outfits. I also start adding in a bit more texture to mimic the cozy knits you'll start to see dominate your feeds from places that cool off much quicker than the southern part of the country.

For this week's real outfit roundup, I have four school-approved outfits for y'all. I did not take a picture of my Thursday outfit because I was dressed for my school's football game, at which I worked the ticket booth and was miserably hot and wilted by the end of the game.

Sizing info: I'm 5'2" and about 140 lbs. I usually wear size 6 or S/M in clothes and size 7 in shoes.

Sweater / Skirt / Belt (similar) / Shoes

If this outfit looks familiar, it's because I shared an incomplete version of it in my teacher try-on haul last month. The only difference in that post and this one is that I added a belt and put on shoes.

This short-sleeved sweater is a great transition piece and is perfect for a milder fall/winter. The colors of the embroidered flowers is a bit dark for spring, I think. We're currently still experiencing mid-to-upper 90s, so I was a bit worried about being too warm. However, I never felt like I was overheating.

This skirt is a utility style, which I think is a way to tackle the popular cargo trend without the bulky pockets that just do not work for me. This skirt comes in a yellow and pretty berry color as well. I recommend sizing up for more movement since there is absolutely no stretch at all in the fabric.

My shoes are the same loafers I've been sharing for two years, and they are still just as comfortable. That said, I don't love them with this outfit, but I think that might be because my belt is too dark. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say.

T-shirt / Pants / Shoes (similar)

I shared these linen pants last week but in a much more dressed-up outfit. This go 'round I wanted a more casual outfit so I paired them with my new "Be Kind" t-shirt, which has almost the exact same shade of green in the letters. I played around with tucking and knotting the t-shirt but ultimately decided to just leave it untucked. The colors are right, but I struggled getting the proportions just right.

The pants have a wide smocked waistband, which is part of the reason why I struggled with tucking the t-shirt. They've also got some permanent pleats that give them a faux-trousers look, which I like. They did shrink a smidge in the wash so they're not quite as long as they were originally. That actually works out okay for me since before I would not have been able to wear flat shoes with them.

I finished the look with my five-plus year old Puma sneakers, which my students all seemed to like. These sneakers have a platform base so they give me a little elevation. This particular style is long gone, but Puma has lots of similar styles. I linked to one with similar colors.

This is another finished outfit from my teacher try-on haul post from last month.

My t-shirt is a nod to Beauty and the Beast. It says "Tale As Old As Time - Belle's Bookshop." It's not an exact match for these floral pants, but the colors are close enough that it works. Both the shirt and pants are from Temu. The quality on the t-shirt is nice. The pants are a gauzy material. They are not lined. They have a paperbag-style waist, so it's kind of ruffled at the top, with belt loops and a sash tie. I'm not crazy about the tie, but that's mostly because I'm terrible at tying them. The base color of the pants is navy blue, so I finished the look with my navy blue flats.

T-shirt / Pants / Shoes (similar)

On Friday, my students got to dress down if they had met certain requirements. Teachers are already allowed to wear jeans on Friday, but I wanted to kind of match my students...but in an ironic way since I've been dressing this way since the 90s.

This t-shirt is one of my favorites. You can find it in a bunch of different base colors, but I like it in the white. I ordered this in a large based on reviews but should have ordered a medium. It's a bit too loose, so I tied it up in the back and tucked the tail under (which is what my girls are doing with their t-shirts, as well, with no clue that that trick has been around for ages).

I love love love these cargo pants. The pockets on the legs are flat, so they don't add bulk to my thighs, which is my number one complaint with cargo pants. These keep selling out, but right now they're back in stock in most sizes. I highly recommend them.

My wedge sneakers are old, but I found a similar pair to link to for you. Unfortunately, they don't have the cool zipper details that mine do.
